4. Course Retake Policy
4.1 – Flight Labs
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) dictates that the student demonstrates satisfactory proficiency and competency within the approved standards as described in the current edition of the Airman Certification Standards (ACS), which provides what a student must know, consider, and demonstrate proficiency to pass the required exams for the issuance of an airman certificate or rating.
Students only displaying demonstrated ability will be classified as a 70%, or the equivalent letter grade of a “C.” If a student fails demonstrate the ability of a particular flight lab will receive the letter grade of “F.”
Students may retake the flight lab as outlined below:
-
A student may not repeat a flight lab more than once.
-
The first time a student repeats a flight lab no formal academic review is required.
-
If a student fails a subsequent flight lab a formal academic review is required
-
Example: A student fails AVI 2100 (Rotor-Wing Private Pilot Lab II) and repeat the AVI 2100 without a formal review. If the same student fails AVI 3100 (Commercial Flight Operations Lab I) a formal review would be required before allowing the student to repeat AVI 3100.
-
Any subsequent retakes must receive authorization from a committee consisting of at least the following: Program Director/Chief Flight Instructor, the Assistant Chief Flight Instructor, and the Engineering Technology Department Chair. The Dean of the College of STEM may approve the request based on the recommendation from the committee.
-
Request to exercise this option must be submitted to the Aviation Science Program Director/Chief Flight Instructor.
-
Students must provide written documentation of the circumstances for the prior flight lab failure and an explanation of how and why the second attempt will be successful.
-
Providing this documentation does not guarantee and additional retake approval.
-
-
Past flight training performance and current academic standing will be considered in approving or disapproving a request.
-
Students will be informed of approval or disapproval after an application has been submitted and adequate time has been allowed to consider the request.
DISCLAIMER: These flight lab retake policies supersede the APSU General Policy for course retakes.
