5. Fire Precautions and Procedures

Fire precautions involve regular inspections, maintenance, and training on safety protocols and procedures. Fire procedures prioritize immediate action and include shutting off fuel, commencing descent, declaring an emergency, and using available resources to locate and extinguish the fire.

Fire extinguishers are located in the aircraft, on the fuel trucks, and in the hangars.

5.1 Fueling

Servicing personnel should properly ground the helicopter and the truck when the helicopter is being fueled.

Do not allow anyone to sit in the aircraft while servicing is in progress.

Authorized students will not refuel aircraft unsupervised by flight instructor or maintenance personnel.

5.2 Aircraft Fire on Ground

Attempt to call for assistance on any radio frequency (tower, ground, UNICOM, guard, etc.)

Do not hesitate to evacuate the aircraft if you determine the fire is uncontrollable.

If you are not at Clarksville Regional Airport, once the fire is extinguished call APSU Aviation Operations for further instructions.

Care should be taken to avoid over priming the engine in cold weather.

5.3 Engine Fire

An engine fire can be caused by items accidentally left in the engine compartment, a bird’s nest, or by a ruptured fuel or oil line. A thorough preflight check can minimize the possibilities.

If an engine fire is encountered, follow the recommended procedure outlined in the Pilot’s Operating Handbook. This procedure SHOULD be committed to memory.

  • Engine fire on start-up

    • Move the mixture to the cutoff position

    • Continue cranking the engine until the fire is extinguished

    • Consult the emergency checklist for further procedures

5.4 Electrical Fire

In the event of an electrical fire, turn OFF the electrical system (NOT THE MAGNETOS) and follow the manufacturer’s recommended procedures.
