5. Safety Promotion

5.1 – Overview

APSU leadership is dedicated to promoting the growth of a positive safety culture, by encouraging and communicating safety information to members of the Aviation Science program. AT a minimum, APSU will communicate the following safety information:

  • The Safety Commitment Letter

  • Publications, communications, and safety information containing safety-related data

  • An effective safety reporting and feedback system

  • Communicating safety responsibilities for personnel

5.2 – Safety Training

Safety training is one of the critical elements of safety management. To conduct a successful program, participants should be trained in appropriate concepts, duties, and responsibilities associated with each area of activity within the APSU Aviation Science program.

Safety training is required for all faculty, staff, flight instructors, ACTIVE aviation students, and primary Aviation Safety Committee members. The amount of safety training should be appropriate for the individual’s responsibility and involvement in the safety program.

Safety training will be conducted, at a minimum, upon a new hire, prior to a student beginning AVI 1100, annually, and remedial (as needed). Required training is also used as an administrative tool to mitigate risk.

5.3 – Safety Communications

All safety communications will be housed on the APSU Aviation Science share drive.

Pertinent safety communications will be emailed directly to all APSU Aviation Science members through their APSU email account. This communication will ensure all personnel are made aware of safety-critical information and informed as to why safety actions have been taken and ensures a thorough understanding of why safety procedures are introduced or changed.

APSU Email Account

The primary means of safety communication will be completed through faculty, staff, and student APSU email accounts. It is recommended the APSU Aviation Science organization check their email weekly, at a minimum. Pertinent safety information and safety training will be sent and scheduled through this account.

Safety Bulletin Board

A Safety Bulletin Board will be created and mounted in the hangar to be readily accessible to all personnel. Copies of the safety meeting minutes and semesterly hazard report should be posted each semester. Applicable safety information will also be posted on the board.

5.4 – Recordkeeping

A copy of all APSU Safety information, records, and data will be housed in the university’s sharedrive named “Aviation Science.” This will help ensure all safety files are easily found and accessed.

Pertinent safety information to each safety management process will be maintained for a minimum, of the following:

  • Risk Management — Retained for as long as the control remains relevant to the operation

  • Safety Assurance — Retained for a minimum of 5 years

  • Safety Training — Retained for as long as the person is with the Aviation Science program

  • Communications — Retained for 24 consecutive calendar months
