Christina Longhurst talks to international students in Sundquist

Instructors at the ESL Institute have taught English in the U.S. and abroad. All have strong backgrounds in education – most with Master’s degrees and concentrations in English, language and/or education – and extensive experience in teaching English to non-English speakers. In addition, most instructors have also experienced the learning of a language.

The ESL Institute is located in the McReynolds building on the Clarksville campus of Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, The United States of America. A city surrounded by natural beauty.

Take a Virtual Tour

Situated 45 minutes northwest of Nashville, the University is convenient to Nashville International Airport, the excitement of Music City USA and professional hockey and football teams.

As one of Tennessee’s fastest-growing public universities, APSU occupies a beautifully pastoral, 180-acre campus in Clarksville, Tennessee. Each year, students from around the world enroll at the school to take advantage of Austin Peay’s diverse offering of associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degree programs, in addition to its specialized English language (ESL) program.

The University’s faculty and staff make each student a priority, which is why Austin Peay has been nationally recognized for its student-success initiatives. Students thrive on this campus because of its inspiring academic environment, coupled with a focus on extra-curricular offerings.

When individuals aren’t in class, they enjoy attending sporting events in 16 different sports and participating in social events and academic student associations. That’s why Austin Peay isn’t simply a university; it’s a community of learners from across the globe.

The many opportunities in and out of the classroom will give students a true American cultural experience.

Adolph Dagan poses in classroom

Adolph Dagan ('14)

Togo, West Africa native, Education major

As the only class member who did not speak clear English, he was the only male to complete and pass his courses. That was a sign for Dagan, and something that pushes him today to help others.

“I want to encourage others to excel, that come from other countries and believe that learning and the curriculum at Austin Peay is difficult,” he said. “They can do it and it can be done.”
