Usage of AI Images
Purpose: To establish clear boundaries for using AI-generated images on the APSU website.
The Core Rule: Our website must reflect the reality of Austin Peay. We do not use AI to create a false appearance of our community or campus.
What is Prohibited?
You may not use AI-generated or significantly AI-edited images for the following categories:
Real People & Community Members
-
Definition: Images depicting students, faculty, staff, alumni, or generic "people" meant to represent the APSU community.
-
The Rule: Do not use AI to generate people.
-
Why?
-
Integrity: Prospective students choose APSU because they want to know who is really here. AI faces are a form of false advertising.
-
Consistency: Using fake headshots or students creates confusion when compared to our official photography.
-
-
Alternative: If you need a headshot or a photo of students, please request a photographer.
Campus & Buildings
-
Definition: Images of the APSU grounds, buildings, dorms, or classrooms.
-
The Rule: Do not use AI to generate or significantly alter photos of campus property.
-
Exception: Professional architectural renderings created by University Construction are permitted.
APSU Logos & Branding
-
The Rule: Do not use AI to create, modify, or "remix" the APSU logo or The Gov. Brand consistency is critical.
What is Permitted?
You may use Generative AI images for:
Abstract Ideas & Artwork
Definition: Images that illustrate abstract ideas or original artwork where a real photo doesn't exist or isn't appropriate.
Examples: A graphic representing "Cybersecurity" (e.g., a digital lock).
-
Conceptual icons or spot illustrations for academic topics (e.g., a beaker for Chemistry, a circuit motif for Engineering).
-
An abstract geometric illustration used as a section divider or accent graphic.
-
A diagram-style illustration to visualize a process or idea (not depicting real people or campus).
All images on the website must follow [accessibility guidelines], even AI-generated images.
Requirements for Permitted Use:
-
Approval: The image must be approved by the department supervisor.
-
Brand Alignment: It must not violate APSU Brand Guidelines.
-
Labeling: You must strictly follow the labeling rule below.
Required Labeling
If you use a permitted AI image on the website, you must be transparent about its origin.
The Caption Rule
You are required to place a visible caption directly below or beside the image that reads: "Image generated by AI"
The Alt Text Rule
Because the visible caption informs users that the image is AI, your Alt Text does not need to repeat that fact. Instead, use the Alt Text to describe the visual content for accessibility.
-
Example Scenario: You are using an AI illustration of a futuristic computer chip.
-
Visible Caption: "Image generated by AI"
-
Alt Text: "Illustration of a computer processor chip glowing with blue light."
