At APSU, the Department of Music plays a vibrant and essential role in campus life, the Clarksville community, and the greater region. We are housed in a state-of-the-art facility that includes premier practice rooms, rehearsal and studio spaces, and a nationally recognized concert hall—designed to foster excellence in every aspect of music education and performance.

Our faculty are not only accomplished performers and scholars, but also dedicated mentors who take a genuine interest in each student’s development. Through close engagement both in and beyond the classroom, they cultivate a supportive, inspiring, and collaborative learning environment.

With exceptional ensembles, forward-thinking outreach initiatives, and comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs, the Department of Music at APSU continues to grow as one of the region’s foremost centers for music.

Mission

The Department of Music provides an undergraduate and graduate education that produces skilled, knowledgeable, and creative musicians.

 

Vision

Our vision is to contribute artistically to contemporary life through the study of music. Students develop skills of self-actualization and critical thinking, entrepreneurship, collaboration, and cultural awareness and sensitivity, building a life-long relationship with music and the arts. 

To facilitate this vision, each student will:

  • demonstrate technical abilities and an informed artistic approach that is evident in their performance on their primary instrument as appropriate to their major.
  • demonstrate career-appropriate piano competencies.
  • demonstrate their ability to analyze and interpret music in notated and aural formats.
  • categorize and interpret the music of diverse genres, styles, periods, and cultures.
  • engage with a broad range of musical performances through attendance at events such as recitals, concerts, opera, and music theatre productions.

To facilitate this vision, each student will:

  • apply appropriate research methods to explore topics within their chosen concentrations.
  • independently locate and use appropriate resources to advance knowledge within a chosen research topic.
  • write about music at a professional level suitable to the area of specialization.
  • speak about music at a professional level suitable to the area of specialization.
  • synthesize a broad range of knowledge at a level suitable to the area of specialization.
  • demonstrate mastery of content and skills suitable to the area of specialization with graduate-level technique and artistry.

APSU offers a diverse selection of large and chamber ensembles for vocalists and instrumentalists. Most ensembles are open to majors and non-majors. Visit our ensembles page to learn more about how you can get involved.

Austin Peay State University is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).The Music Therapy program is approved by the American Music Therapy Association.
