Laser Safety
Lasers are used in a variety of teaching, research, and operational settings and can present serious hazards if not used properly. Laser safety practices are designed to protect against eye injuries, skin exposure, and other risks associated with laser use.
All laser users are responsible for understanding the hazards of their equipment and following established safety procedures.
Never operate a laser without proper training, protective equipment, and understanding of its hazards.
When should I follow laser safety practices?
- Operate or work near laser equipment
- Align, maintain, or service lasers
- Work in areas where lasers are in use
- Handle Class 3B or Class 4 lasers
- Enter designated laser-controlled areas
Do not use if:
- You have not received appropriate training
- Required safety controls or protective equipment are not in place
- The laser is damaged, modified, or not functioning properly
- Warning signs or labels are missing
- You are unsure of the laser classification or hazards
What to do instead:
- Stop work and do not operate the laser
- Notify your supervisor or principal investigator
- Contact Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) for guidance
- Ensure proper training and controls are in place before use
Key laser safety practices
- Never look directly into a laser beam or at reflections
- Use appropriate laser safety eyewear when required
- Keep beam paths controlled and below eye level whenever possible
- Remove reflective items (e.g., jewelry, tools) from the work area
- Ensure protective housings and interlocks are in place
- Post appropriate warning signage for laser-controlled areas
Laser classifications
- Class 1: Safe under normal conditions
- Class 2: Low-power visible lasers; avoid direct eye exposure
- Class 3R / 3B: Moderate risk; eye protection may be required
- Class 4: High risk; can cause serious eye and skin injuries and may pose fire hazards
Higher-class lasers require additional controls, training, and supervision.
Controlled areas and signage
Areas where certain lasers are used must be clearly marked with warning signs. Access may be restricted to trained and authorized personnel. Always follow posted instructions before entering a laser-controlled area.
