What Is the FSL Study Room?

The FSL Study Room is a dedicated, sensory-friendly academic space designed to support focus, accountability, and independent learning. It provides FSL participants with a structured environment to complete coursework, prepare for exams, and develop consistent academic routines.

The Study Room is overseen by trained Peer Coaches who help students stay accountable to their study hour requirements while providing support with organization, time management, study strategies, goal setting, and academic planning.

Who It's For

The FSL Study Room is available to all Full Spectrum Learning participants and is especially supportive for students who:

  • Prefer a quieter, lower-distraction environment for completing academic work

  • Benefit from structured study time and consistent weekly routines

  • Need support with organization, planning, time management, or executive functioning

  • Want access to Peer Coach support while working independently

  • Are completing required FSL study hours as part of their individualized support plan

Study Hour Requirements

FSL participants complete weekly study hours based on their academic standing, cumulative GPA, and time in the program:

  • First-year students: 3 hours per week

  • Sophomores–seniors with a GPA of 3.6 or below: 3 hours per week

  • Sophomores–seniors with a GPA of 3.7 or above: 1 hour per week

Study hours may be completed in the FSL Study Room, Learning Lounge, approved tutoring sessions, or other approved academic support activities. Students are expected to actively engage in academic work during their study hours.

Attendance and Accountability

Students are required to check in and check out of study hours using the designated system. Attendance is monitored weekly by FSL staff to ensure students are meeting their required hours and receiving the support they need.

Students are expected to:

  • Check in and out using the designated system

  • Arrive prepared with academic work or study materials

  • Use study time for coursework, reading, writing, test preparation, projects, tutoring, or academic planning

  • Maintain a respectful and distraction-free environment

  • Communicate with FSL staff if they need support or are unable to attend

Attendance is reviewed regularly, and students who fall behind on required study hours may receive follow-up communication and additional support through their Case Manager or FSL staff.

Peer Coach Support

The Study Room is staffed by trained Peer Coaches who help create a supportive and accountable learning environment. Peer Coaches are available to:

  • Monitor study hour attendance

  • Assist with time management and organization strategies

  • Help students break down assignments into manageable steps

  • Support goal setting and academic planning

  • Encourage effective study strategies

  • Connect students with campus resources when needed

  • Provide encouragement, accountability, and problem-solving support

Peer Coaches do not replace tutors, instructors, or professional staff. They serve as peer support leaders who help students build the skills needed for academic independence and long-term success.

Sensory-Friendly Environment

The Study Room is designed to be sensory-conscious and supportive of diverse learning needs. Students can work independently while still having access to support when needed.

Available supports may include:

  • Flexible seating options

  • Low-distraction study areas

  • Noise-reducing headphones

  • Fidget tools

  • Visual planning supports

  • Access to nearby sensory regulation resources

Students are encouraged to use the tools and strategies that best support their focus, regulation, and learning.

Our Goal

The goal of the FSL Study Room is to provide a structured, supportive, and sensory-friendly environment where students can complete academic work, build effective study habits, and grow in confidence and independence.

Through consistent routines, Peer Coach support, and individualized accountability, the Study Room helps FSL students develop the skills needed for success in college and beyond.
