FSL Peer Mentor Program
FSL supports students socially through peer mentoring relationships that help them transition to Austin Peay State University and pursue their self-determined social goals. Participants are paired with Peer Mentors who demonstrate leadership, social awareness, and genuine interest in supporting students with ASD.

Mentor Services
Peer Mentors meet with their mentee once a week, submit a report after each session to the FSL office, and commit to the position for one full academic year. They model appropriate social behaviors, introduce FSL students to campus organizations and connections while maintaining confidentiality, and help participants develop a genuine sense of belonging at APSU. Peer Mentors receive training and resources from the Peer Mentor Coordinator before each semester begins.
Mentor Benefits
Becoming a Peer Mentor develops a range of transferable skills—including leadership, teamwork, time management, compassion, decision-making, and active listening. Mentors encounter real situations that build adaptability and problem-solving abilities. This paid experience can be added to a resume, LinkedIn profile, or career portfolio as evidence of working effectively with diverse individuals and navigating new environments. Mentors also expand their social network and experience genuine personal growth and fulfillment.
Mentee Benefits
FSL participants who work with Peer Mentors develop a stronger understanding of the university and the Clarksville community. They grow in self-motivation, self-discipline, and goal-setting, gaining practical encouragement and social skills through each mentoring relationship. Mentees build strategies for navigating social situations, show increased confidence academically and socially, and feel more empowered to make independent decisions—all while building a real friendship.
