Guidelines for Use of AI-Generated and Edited Images
Purpose and Scope
These guidelines establish clear parameters for using AI-generated or significantly edited images across university communications and the APSU website.
Guidelines for Specific Image Categories
Images Representing APSU Community Members
-
Definition: Includes photographs of employees, students, alums, and any identifiable members of the APSU community
-
Guideline: AI-generated or AI-edited images of known persons should not be used on the APSU website or in official university communications
-
Rationale:
-
Integrity: AI-generated images are not true representations of individuals, even if they look similar.
-
Credibility: AI-generated images often contain inconsistencies that viewers can detect, which could undermine the university's credibility.
-
Consistency: The Faculty/Staff Directory uses official APSU headshots. Using different AI-generated images of the same individuals elsewhere creates confusion.
-
-
Alternative: Faculty or staff members who need updated headshots can schedule a professional photo with PR & Marketing: https://www.apsu.edu/photography/headshot-request.php
Images Incorporating APSU Logos and Brand Elements
-
Guideline: Images that alter APSU logos or Unit Identifiers without authorization from PR & Marketing should not be used.
-
Resource: For proper logo usage, see the APSU Brand and Identity Guidelines
Images of Campus, Buildings, or APSU Property
-
Guideline: AI-generated or significantly altered images of campus, buildings, or APSU property should not be used on the APSU website.
-
-
Exception: Professional architectural renderings by University Construction and their authorized vendors are permitted.
-
Images Representing Concepts or Ideas
-
Guideline: Generative AI images illustrating ideas, concepts, providing decoration, or used in flyers are permitted, provided they:
-
Follow accessibility guidelines per WCAG 2.1 AA
-
Comply with APSU Brand and Identity Guidelines
-
Are approved by the department/office's supervisor
-
Compliance and Resources
