Student Success Coaches

Student Success Coaches are current graduate students who serve as near-peer mentors for first-generation freshmen. They provide an additional layer of support throughout the college transition by checking in regularly, helping students work through challenges, setting goals, navigating college expectations, connecting them with the right people and resources, and simply being another supportive person in their corner.

Students are assigned a Student Success Coach at the beginning of the academic year and remain with the same coach throughout the school year, allowing students and coaches to build a meaningful connection over time.

What to Expect from a Coach

Your Student Success Coach will check in with you each month throughout the academic year by email, text, and phone. Sometimes, we’ll simply ask how things are going. Other times, we may share helpful information, important reminders, or resources based on what you need. You can also find your coach's contact information in AP Navigate at any time if you need to reach out.

Not every student is assigned a Student Success Coach, so take advantage of having someone in your corner! You don’t have to wait for your coach to contact you; you can reach out anytime you have a question, need support, or just want to talk through something.

Student Success Coaches can help with:

  • Adjusting to college and navigating the transition

  • Time management and organizational skills

  • Developing effective study habits and academic strategies

  • Setting goals and staying motivated and accountable

  • Getting involved on campus and finding a sense of community

  • Understanding and navigating college expectations

  • Working through challenges and identifying next steps

  • Finding the right person, office, or resource when you’re not sure where to go

  • Celebrating successes and accomplishments

  • Simply having someone to check in with throughout the year

Frequently Asked Questions

While not every first-year student is assigned a Student Success Coach, every student participating in the Purpose First Scholars program is guaranteed a coach.

Students are assigned a Student Success Coach at the beginning of the fall semester in early September. If you are assigned a coach, you’ll receive a notification through your APSU email. Your assigned coach will also appear on your AP Navigate.

No. Your Academic Advisor and Student Success Coach are two different people who support you in different ways.

Your Academic Advisor primarily helps you with course registration, class scheduling, degree requirements, and staying on track within your major.

Your Student Success Coach takes a more holistic approach to your college experience. They can help you develop study strategies, manage your time and procrastination, create a budget, explore employment opportunities, get involved on campus, set goals, navigate challenges, and much more.

While meetings are not required, students are strongly encouraged to connect with their Student Success Coach. Our coaches are APSU alumni who understand the college experience and can offer valuable insight, encouragement, and support based on their own experiences as students. Most of our coaches are also first-generation college students, adding another layer of shared experience, relatability, and support.

Even a quick conversation can help you identify your next step, work through a challenge, or discover opportunities you may not have known about.

Absolutely! Your coach isn’t only there when you’re struggling. They’re also there to celebrate your wins, help you work toward your goals, talk through new opportunities, and cheer you on when things are going well.
