First Generation Student Success Initiatives
At Austin Peay, we are dedicated to supporting first-generation students—those whose parents or guardians did not complete a four-year degree. About 40% of all APSU students are first-generation, and we offer comprehensive support through three key initiatives designed to help these students thrive throughout their college journey.
Our First-Generation Programs
G1Govs
A community and student organization connecting first-generation students to opportunities for leadership development, networking, and building community. G1Govs hosts regular events and provides a supportive network for students navigating the college experience.
Purpose First Scholars
Start your college journey with purpose! The Purpose First Scholars Learning Community is designed for first-generation students who want to explore their interests, find their path, and build the confidence to succeed in college and beyond.
As a Purpose First Scholar, you’ll join a supportive group of peers who share similar goals and experiences. Together, you’ll take connected courses, attend hands-on workshops, and participate in fun, career-focused events that help you connect what you’re learning in the classroom to your future.
In the fall semester, you’ll take an academic course (UNIV 1000: Freshman Seminar) that helps you adjust to college life, strengthen your study habits, and develop strategies for success. In the spring semester, you’ll take a career development course (UNIV 2100: Preparing for the World of Work) that helps you discover your career interests, create your resume and LinkedIn profile, and practice your elevator pitch through mock networking and interview sessions among other things.
You’ll also have access to dedicated peer mentors, student success coaches, and campus resources that make your first year meaningful and connected. By the end of the program, you’ll leave with a clear sense of direction and the tools to get where you want to go.
