Discover APSU's G1Gov Community

At Austin Peay State University, a G1Gov is any student where neither parent or guardian has not completed a four year degree, regardless of sibling or extended family education.

By The Numbers

As of Fall 2025, 40% of all APSU students are first generation.

In 2024, about 40% of the APSU freshman class was first generation. This number rose to 61% for the 2025 freshman class.

Over 100 G1Govs were recognized at the inaugural pinning ceremony.

Celebrating First-Generation Students

On November 8, 2019, APSU participated in the First Generation College Celebration Day, commemorating the 54th anniversary of the 1965 Higher Education Act. This legislation has empowered countless first-generation students to enroll and graduate from college.

On August 24, 2019, we held an inaugural recognition event to honor incoming G1Govs. A pinning ceremony highlighted this significant occasion. You can read more about the event in the story covered by The All State.

In 2023, Austin Peay's Purpose First Scholars program was awarded the NASPA Silver Excellence Award for first generation student support.

In July 2025, Austin Peay became a First Gen Forward member, demonstrating its commitment to supporting and celebrating first generation students.
