At Austin Peay State University, a G1Gov is any student whose parents or guardians have not completed a four-year degree, regardless of whether siblings or extended family have. About 40% of APSU students are first-generation, and the G1Gov community is here to help you connect, find support, and succeed.

Join us for a week of events celebrating our first-generation students, faculty, staff, and alumni, including the grand opening of the new First-Gen Commons, a men's basketball game, a faculty panel, and trivia night.

As of fall 2025, 40% of all APSU students are first-generation.

In 2024, about 40% of the APSU freshman class was first-generation. That number rose to 61% for the 2025 freshman class.

More than 100 G1Govs were recognized at the inaugural pinning ceremony.
First-Gen Commons
The First-Gen Commons opens Monday, November 9, 2026, in Memorial Health 104. It's a space created for first-gen students to connect, study, find support, and feel at home on campus.
Celebrating First-Generation Students
August 24, 2019: APSU held an inaugural recognition event to honor incoming G1Govs, highlighted by a pinning ceremony.

November 8, 2019: APSU took part in First-Generation College Celebration Day, marking the 54th anniversary of the Higher Education Act of 1965. That law has helped countless first-generation students enroll in and graduate from college.
2023: APSU's Purpose First Scholars program received the NASPA Silver Excellence Award for first-generation student support.
July 2025: Austin Peay became a FirstGen Forward member, showing its commitment to supporting and celebrating first-generation students.
Get Involved with G1Gov
Join the G1Gov Student Organization
The G1Gov student organization meets to plan events and activities for first-generation students. Members can also build leadership skills by serving on the executive board.
Academic Excellence: Alpha Alpha Alpha (Tri-Alpha)
Alpha Alpha Alpha is a national honor society for first-generation college students who demonstrate academic excellence. To be eligible, you need at least 30 credit hours and a minimum 3.2 GPA. New members are inducted each spring, and invitations are sent to your AP Email.
