Available Honors Courses

HON 1045 - Foundations of Interdisciplinary Thinking | 3 Credit Hours

 

Description: This course provides incoming freshmen in the Honors Program an introduction to college level reading and writing. Topics will vary according to the department and instructor, but all will be interdisciplinary and closely focused on a theme. Each incoming Honors freshman is required to take an Honors seminar during the fall term.

HON 2000 - STEM Scholar Seed Research | 3 Credit Hours

 

Description: This course provides APSU STEM students with hands-on experience in research by collaborating closely with faculty mentors from the College of STEM. Students will engage in research project development, develop and submit research abstracts, and present posters at the end of the semester. Funding for student research will be available.

HON 2110 - Critical Thinking | 3 Credit Hours

 

Description: This course presents the principles of critical thinking and formal argumentation such as understanding how to frame questions, how to discuss various branches of philosophical inquiry, exploration of logical fallacies, deductive and inductive arguments, and the application of such arguments in a paper.

HON 2220 - The Values Driven Life | 3 Credit Hours

 

Description: Exploration of the idea and reality of various cultures. Examples include addressing differences among people through literature, media reports, film, music, or art. Students will learn how to respond to differences among cultures rationally rather than emotionally. This course is largely discussion based.

HON 2510 - The World of Work | 3 Credit Hours

 

Description: This course explores the history, contemporary meanings and transformations of work and employment through an interdisciplinary social science lens. Relying on ethnographic accounts of work, students will examine working conditions and jobs in the United Stated and beyond, with a critical focus on how globalization shapes labor markets. Major course themes include cultural meanings of work, theories of work and employment and how social attributes like race, class and gender shape our experience of work and opportunity. Comprehension of current trends, pathways to employment and the organization of work empowers students to better navigate jobs markets and the role of work in their own lives.

HON 2520 - Community Communication and Servant Leadership | 3 Credit Hours

 

Description: An Honors Service Learning course to enhance public speaking skills while exploring leadership interests for community service. Students will apply public speaking principles and techniques with emphasis on informative and persuasive speeches. The class combines the speech communication process with use of outlining, research visual aids, and audience analysis.

HON 300A - Interdisciplinary Studies II | 1-4 Credit Hours

 

Description: Continuation of interdisciplinary study at an intermediate level. Topics will vary. The number of credit hours will be determined by the instructor but will be no less than one and no more than four.

HON 4000 - Senior Honors Capstone Seminar | 3 Credit Hours

 

Description: An interdisciplinary synthesizing seminar.

HON 4050 - Honors Thesis | 3 Credit Hours

 

Description: Students in the Honors Program may write a thesis, complete a project, or perform a set of recitals to satisfy requirements for graduating from the Honors Program. Students work with faculty on projects chosen by the student and faculty member in consultation with the Director of the Honors Program.

HON 4400 - Interdisciplinary Studies II | 1-4 Credit Hours

 

Description: Continuation of applying the principles of interdisciplinary study to a broad range of topics at an advanced level.

HON 4510 - Honors Internship | 1-12 Credit Hours

 

Description: Students will complete an internship either on or off campus.
