Luke Warren: Some Assembly Required

Artist Luke Warren sits in his studio beside a large wooden box sculpture elevated on neon green and pink branching supports.Some Assembly Required, a solo exhibition by Luke Warren, Assistant Professor of the Department of Art + Design at Austin Peay State University examines the relationship between childhood imagination, sculptural space, and the development of an interdisciplinary artistic practice. Public programs, including a gallery talk, lecture, musical performance, and documentary screening, will offer additional insight into Warren's artistic research, professional practice, and the broader contexts in which his art is created and experienced.

At the core of the Some Assembly Required exhibition is a collaboration between Warren as an adult artist and his ten-year-old self. The large-scale and interactive objects in the form of a treehouse, pillow fort, and sandbox draw on the imaginative freedom of childhood play while presenting refined aesthetics and craft.

About the Artist

Luke Warren is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Clarksville, Tennessee. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art + Design at Austin Peay State University, where he has taught sculpture since 2024. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Film, Television and Digital Media from Texas Christian University in 2017 and a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2020.

    Refreshments will be served, and opening remarks will include a welcome from the gallery director, Warren’s reflections, and a brief introduction to the exhibition and Warren’s professional practice.

  • Artist Lecture

    JAN 286:00 P.M.Gotcher Theatre, Trahern, Room 220

    Framed with current APSU students in mind, Warren's lecture will trace the development of his artistic practice, from its roots in childhood imagination to his current body of work. He will discuss key influences, his teaching pedagogy, and his experiences in graduate school and in the years after his undergrad education. The lecture will conclude with reflections on the challenges and potential pitfalls of artistic ego, highlighting insights Warren gained throughout his education, teaching, and professional practice.

  • First Thursday Art Walk

  • Musical Performance: Assembled

    FEB 046:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M.The New Gallery

    As part of his exhibition, Warren will connect his love of music and performance to his sculptural practice through a live rock-and-roll performance in the gallery, using installations as props. The set will feature songs and bands that shaped his musical influences from childhood to adulthood, including an original composition written with longtime friend and collaborator Brenden Ramirez, who will perform alongside APSU percussion professor Andrew Richardson and APSU alum and former staff member Kyle Christmas.

  • Documentary Screening

    Tom Sachs: A Space Program, 2015, directed by Van Neistat
    The documentary screening extends the exhibition’s exportation of artistic practice through a behind-the-scene look at how imagination, research, and experimentation translate into ambitious projects, elevating the ideals embedded in material ingenuity, collaboration, and process transforming a concept into a fully realized installation.
