Hazing Prevention
At Austin Peay State University (APSU), we are deeply committed to fostering a campus environment grounded in honor, integrity, community, and respect. As part of our ongoing efforts to prevent hazing, we host a series of educational programs and events during National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW) each September. These initiatives aim to raise awareness, promote positive traditions, and empower our community to take a stand against hazing.
APSU's Approach to Hazing Prevention
Our hazing prevention strategy is multifaceted, focusing on education, community engagement, and transparency:
- Educational Programs: We offer workshops and training sessions to educate students, faculty, and staff about the dangers of hazing and how to recognize and prevent it.
- Community Engagement: We encourage student organizations to develop positive, inclusive traditions that build camaraderie without resorting to harmful practices.
- Transparency: In alignment with Tennessee law, APSU provides regular updates on hazing incidents and prevention efforts through our Campus Transparency Report.
- Accountability: Each year, all student organization advisors and presidents are required to sign an anti-hazing agreement, reaffirming their commitment to a hazing-free community. Additionally, every new member of a Greek organization must sign an anti-hazing agreement upon accepting an invitation to join.
National Hazing Prevention Week at APSU
During NHPW, APSU hosts a variety of events designed to educate and engage the campus community:
- Guest Speakers: We invite speakers to share personal stories and insights on the impact of hazing, fostering empathy and understanding.
- Interactive Workshops: Students participate in activities that promote team-building and leadership skills without hazing.
- Awareness Campaigns: Campus-wide initiatives highlight the importance of standing against hazing and supporting peers.
