Submission Guidelines

The Red Mud Review is dedicated to promoting the creative works of emerging writers and artists from Tennessee and beyond. The editors welcome submissions of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, visual art, and photography.

All submissions should be emailed to redmud-submissions@apsu.edu and include a brief bio written in third person. Please allow 3-4 weeks for a response from one of the editors on your submission. Acceptable file types for written submissions: .pdf, .doc, .docx. Visual art/photography submissions must be in .jpg format, 2100 pixels on the longest side (6MB or less). Email redmudeditor@apsu.edu with any questions.

General Submission Guidelines: 

Fiction Guidelines: 

  • We accept up to 2 fiction pieces (up to 3,000 words each) per author within each submission period.
  • Major revisions and edits will not be accepted after submission.

 Nonfiction Guidelines: 

  • We accept up to 1 traditional length essay (up to 3,000 words) or 1-3 flash pieces (500-1,500 words each) per author within each submission period.
  • Major revisions and edits will not be accepted after submission.

 Poetry Guidelines: 

  • We accept up to 5 poems per submission period.
  • There is not a length requirement or limit for poetry submissions.

World Language Submissions: 

  • We accept works in languages other than English and require that an English translation be included along with the original piece.
  • If you are unable to provide a translation due to language barriers, please note this in your submission and the editors will work with you. 
  • We reserve the right to screen pieces and translations through language experts at Austin Peay State University.

 Visual Art/Photography:

  • Please limit submissions to 3 works per submission period.
  • Submit pieces in .jpg format, 2100 pixels on the longest side (6MB or less).
  • Please include a word .doc or .pdf with information about the submitted image(s), including title, material, size, and year created. Example:
