History of the APSU Circle

The Austin Peay State University (APSU) Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) is the campus’s leadership honor society, rooted in a tradition of excellence, meaningful campus contributions, and high standards. Founded locally in 1976, the Circle formally joined ODK in 1979 and has since initiated more than 1,500 students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Founding and Early Years (1976–1977)

In 1976, Austin Peay State University President Robert O. Riggs appointed a committee to establish an honorary society recognizing leadership and contributions to campus life. The founding committee included:

  • Mildred Deason (Director of Student Life)

  • Malcolm Glass (Faculty Member)

  • Bonita Wilson (Undergraduate Student)

  • Diana Brent (Faculty Member)

  • Billy Thompson (Faculty Member)

The committee initially established “The Governors Association.” Using rigorous selection standards, they chose seventeen juniors and seniors as charter members. By the spring of 1977, the organization had become the Governors Leadership Society, setting the foundation for the APSU Circle’s enduring culture and traditions.

Affiliation with Omicron Delta Kappa (1978–1979)

From the outset, members prioritized meaningful traditions and the highest standards of leadership. In October 1978, the Society petitioned Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society, to become a prospective circle.

ODK approved the petition in early 1979. On May 4, 1979, national and regional ODK officers officially installed the Austin Peay State University Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, marking APSU’s formal connection to the national network of collegiate leadership circles.

Growth, Impact, and Recognition

Since its installation, the APSU Circle has grown and flourished under the guidance of dedicated faculty and capable student leaders. Today, more than 1,500 individuals—students, faculty, staff, and community members—have been initiated through the APSU Circle, reflecting its broad impact on campus life and leadership development.

Awards and Honors

  • Circle of Distinction Award: Recognized numerous times with one of the highest honors bestowed upon a collegiate Circle by the National Administrative Office.

  • Presidential Award of Excellence: Recipient of this national award presented to top-performing circles within Omicron Delta Kappa.

Leadership Legacy
