Helping a Friend in Crisis

Recognizing when someone you care about is struggling — and knowing what to do — can make a real difference. If you're concerned about a friend, look for these warning signs and follow the steps below.

Warning Signs of Suicide or Self-Harm

  • Direct or indirect threats to hurt or kill themselves, or talking and writing about death or suicide

  • Expressions of hopelessness, helplessness, or feeling trapped

  • Past suicide attempts or self-harming behavior

  • Suicide planning behavior or acquiring means

  • Putting affairs in order or giving away prized possessions

  • Reckless or risky behavior, including excessive substance use

  • Withdrawal from friends, family, or daily activities

  • Unexplained anger, aggression, or irritability

  • A significant recent loss

What to Do: Ask, Listen, Refer

Ask

Start by sharing what you've noticed and expressing that you care. "I've noticed you haven't been going to class lately and I'm worried about you" or "You seem really upset — can you tell me what's going on?" When you're genuinely concerned, ask directly: "Are you thinking about suicide?" It's a hard question, but asking it doesn't plant the idea — it opens the door to help. If you can't ask, find someone who can.

Listen

Give your full attention without rushing to fix things. Don't judge. Validate what your friend is feeling and reflect back what you're hearing so they feel understood.

Refer

Share available resources and offer to help them take the next step — whether that's making a call, walking with them to an office, or checking back in later. Try to get a commitment from them to seek help, then follow up to see how it went.

If you believe your friend is in immediate danger and unable to protect themselves, stay with them if you can and call for help right away.

Alcohol and Marijuana Self-Assessments

Alcohol eCheckUp

The Alcohol eCheckUpToGo is an interactive web survey that lets you enter information about your drinking patterns and receive personalized feedback. It takes about 6–7 minutes, is self-guided, and requires no contact with a counselor.

You'll be asked to enter demographic information, drinking habits, family history, and to complete the World Health Organization's AUDIT. After submission, the tool compares your responses to national and local college norms and displays your results in an easy-to-read format.
