The VA places specific requirements on which courses can be certified for benefits, how your previous credits are evaluated, and how enrollment changes affect your payment. This section covers those rules.
If you are considering dropping a course or withdrawing from the term, contact our office first. Enrollment changes are reported to the VA and can result in debt to APSU, the VA, or both depending on timing.
What to know about your courses
Which courses qualify for VA certification?
The VA only pays for courses that are part of your approved program of education. Certain course types — audited courses, remedial courses taken online, courses outside your degree plan — are not certifiable.
What is the Prior Credit Evaluation?
Federal law requires APSU to evaluate all of your previous education, training, and military experience within your first term of enrollment. This page explains the process and what it means for you.
Can I retake a course?
The rules depend on whether you previously passed or failed the course. Repeating a passed course is not certifiable. Repeating a failed course is subject to APSU's grade forgiveness policy and VA reporting requirements.
What happens if I drop a class or stop attending?
Drops, withdrawals, and non-attendance grades (FN/FA) reduce your certified enrollment and can create a financial debt. The timing of the change determines how much you may owe.
