Why the Sustainability Certificate

The certificate in sustainability focuses on the capacity to balance the present needs of people, the economy, and the environment, while protecting the needs of future generations. Students enrolled in this interdisciplinary program will examine ethical solutions to current and future environmental issues.

This interdisciplinary program focuses on providing students with an opportunity to develop practical, sustainable solutions to environmental problems. Students will gain an understanding of the impact human activity has on our environment and how they can use data-driven decisions to solve issues
related to sustainability.

Because the certificate only requires nine credit hours, the program was designed to be accessible to all those seeking a program in sustainability for career advancement or enhancing their knowledge on contemporary environmental issues. If desired, completion of the certificate will allow students to transition directly into the graduate program in the Department of Biology at APSU. Students who have completed the certificate in sustainability are leaders and advocates for sustainable practices in their industries.

Faculty members who teach courses in the Sustainability Certificate have terminal degrees in their respective fields. Faculty maintain connections to local, state, and federal agencies as well as private industry to help students make connections and gain employment after graduation.
