Languages and Literature Scholarships

The Department of Languages and Literature is so proud of our students; our alumni are too! We have several scholarships that have been endowed to our department for our students to apply for and sustain their education.

Scholarships applications are available in early Spring for the next academic year. We encourage all of our students to apply.

Departmental Scholarships

Clairborne-Woodward Scholarship in Languages and Literature (Writing)

The department awards an additional Claiborne-Woodward Scholarship to honor students majoring or minoring in English. These students have distinguished themselves through their academic achievements and dedication to the field.

Dr. Arthur Eaves Memorial Scholarship

The Dr. Arthur J. Eaves Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Eaves and reflects his belief in the importance of education, opportunity, and commitment to making a positive impact in one’s own community.

Jermone and Janie Burkhart Karrigan Endowment

The Jerome and Janie Burkhart Karrigan Endowment is awarded to students in the Department of Languages and Literature who show strong academic promise and a deep commitment to their educational journey. This award was created to support students who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree a milestone that speaks to both courage and determination.

Languages and Literature Alumni Scholarship

The Languages and Literature Alumni Scholarship is awarded to English and Foreign Language majors who have demonstrated academic excellence and a strong commitment to their studies. Funded by alumni of the department, this scholarship reflects the lasting impact of a Languages and Literature education – and the desire of past graduates to support the next generation.

The Jill Eichhorn Endowed Scholarship

The Jill Eichhorn Endowed Scholarship is awarded to students whose coursework and academic interests reflect a deep commitment to empathy, understanding, and meaningful engagement with the world around them. Created to support undergraduates engaged in areas such as Women and Gender Studies and African American Studies, this scholarship honors Dr. Eichhorn’s legacy as a passionate educator and advocate for transformative learning.


Scholarships for English Majors

Judge William O. Beach Endowed Scholarship Fund For a Junior

The Judge William O. and Dr. Thayer Beach Endowed Scholarship is awarded to one rising junior and one rising senior majoring in English. Selected by the Department of Languages and Literature Scholarship Committee, this award recognizes strong academic achievement and excellence demonstrated consistently over several semesters of study.

Judge William O. Beach Endowed Scholarship Fund For a Senior

The Judge William O. and Dr. Thayer Beach Endowed Scholarship is awarded to one rising junior and one rising senior majoring in English. Selected by the Department of Languages and Literature Scholarship Committee, this award recognizes strong academic achievement and excellence demonstrated consistently over several semesters of study.

The Harriet Noland Memorial Scholarship

The Harriett Noland Mabry Memorial Scholarship is awarded to English majors who demonstrate both academic achievement and a thoughtful engagement with their studies. This scholarship honors the memory of Harriett Noland Mabry and supports students who reflect her love of learning and dedication to the field.

The Pace Scholarship honoring Charles Waters

The Pace Scholarship was established in honor of Charles Waters to support English majors. This award reflects a commitment to helping excellent students move further forward in their studies.


World Language Scholarships

Clairborne-Woodward Scholarship in Foreign Languages

The Claiborne-Woodward Scholarship celebrates students who have shown outstanding dedication to the study of world languages and cultures. The scholarship is awarded in memory of Professor Felix Woodward and made possible by the Claiborne family of Texas and generous local supporters to keep the spirit of global learning and cultural exchanges alive.

Edelweiss Club of Clarksville German Scholarship

The Edelweiss Club of Clarksville Scholarship recognizes academic excellence and passion for the German language. It is awarded to outstanding students who have shown a commitment to the study of German language and culture beyond the second year of German.

J.T. and Kathleen K. Oxford Scholarship in Spanish

The Oxford Scholarship was established in 2005 by Dr. Jeffery and Raquel Oxford – both proud alumni of Austin Peay. This award supports students majoring in Spanish, who demonstrate academic promise and dedication to their studies.


Creative Writing Scholarships

ECA Creative Writing Award

Eligibility: Full-time Undergraduate and Graduate students or incoming Graduate students with at least a 3.0 GPA.

Criteria: Scholarships are awarded for excellence in creative writing and contributions to the APSU creative writing community. Applicants must submit a professional cover letter/artist statement and a 10-20-page creative writing sample. The writing sample can include and combination of fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry. All prose should be double-spaced. Poetry can be single-spaced.

Creative Writing Community Stewardship Award

Eligibility: Full-time Undergraduate and Graduate students or incoming Graduate students with at least a 3.5 GPA.

Experience & Expectations: Scholarship students will gain guided work experience in the fields of publishing and literary event coordinating. Positions include lead Genre Editors for Zone 3 journal, Senior Editor of Red Mud Review, and Team Leads for the Zone 3 Writers Festival. Scholarship students are expected to work six hours per week for the duration of their scholarship.

Criteria: Scholarships are awarded for excellence in creative writing, contributions to the APSU creative writing community, and a professional dedication to stewardship of the literary arts. Applicants must submit a professional cover letter/artist statement and a 10-20-page creative writing sample. The writing sample can include and combination of fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry. All prose should be double-spaced. Poetry can be single-spaced.
