APSU Student Organization Council Logo

The Student Organization Council (SOC) is the governing body for student organizations at Austin Peay State University, responsible for allocating funding and keeping organizations informed of policy and procedure changes. The executive board meets with organizations each semester to gather student feedback and support the implementation of programs and services for the APSU community.

Executive Board Roles and Responsibilities

The SOC serves as a governing body representing student organizations at APSU and addressing their needs. Core functions include recognizing new student organizations, reviewing and re-recognizing existing organizations, funding student organization events, and supporting organizational development.

Essential Functions — All Positions

All executive board members are expected to:

  • Build and maintain rapport with student organizations, advisers, and the general APSU student population

  • Promote team spirit and encourage collegiality among members

  • Plan and implement meaningful meetings for the SOC

  • Work independently and collaborate effectively with others

  • Maintain confidentiality in all organizational matters

  • Review and update organization policies and procedures

Minimum Qualifications — All Positions

To serve on the SOC Executive Board, candidates must:

  • Be enrolled at APSU in at least 9 credit hours (undergraduate) or 6 credit hours (graduate), excluding summer hours

  • Hold a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate), including developmental and transfer credits

  • Be in good academic standing with no formal discipline record

  • Be an active member of a registered APSU student organization (a leadership position is not required)

  • Serve in the position from May through April

  • Participate in transition mentoring prior to the position start date

  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, organizational, and decision-making skills

President

The President presides over all SOC Executive Board meetings and serves as the primary liaison between the SOC, student organizations, and APSU administration.

 

Primary Duties:

  • Preside over SOC Executive Board meetings and arrange additional meetings as needed

  • Organize and preside over meetings with recognized student organizations

  • Represent the SOC on University committees

  • Coordinate and facilitate the annual student organization training with the adviser

  • Coordinate and facilitate student organization travel allocations

  • Help organize and implement involvement fairs

  • Serve as liaison between the SOC, student organizations, and APSU administration

  • Maintain office hours in the Office of Student Life and Engagement

  • Execute special projects on behalf of the SOC adviser

The President may not serve as president of another student organization during their term of office with the SOC.

Executive Vice President

The Executive Vice President manages student organization registration and records, and assumes the President's responsibilities in their absence.

 

Primary Duties:

  • Set deadlines for student organization registration materials

  • Collect and manage all organization, officer, and adviser information for recognized student organizations

  • Establish and maintain organization files and contact lists

  • Organize and facilitate organization in-service trainings as needed

  • Serve in the role of President in the President's absence

  • Maintain office hours in the Office of Student Life and Engagement

  • Execute special projects on behalf of the SOC adviser

Vice President of Finance

The Vice President of Finance oversees all student organization funding processes, from financial training to budget management.

 

Primary Duties:

  • Coordinate and facilitate student organization financial trainings

  • Manage and maintain all student organization funding requests

  • Organize and facilitate all student organization funding meetings

  • Submit all budget transactions and check requests to the adviser within 10 academic days of an event

  • Work with the SLE administrative assistant to maintain an accurate master budget ledger

  • Maintain office hours in the Office of Student Life and Engagement

  • Execute special projects on behalf of the SOC adviser

Vice President of Marketing and Communications

The Vice President of Marketing and Communications promotes the SOC and facilitates communication between the SOC, student organizations, and the Office of Student Life and Engagement.

 

Primary Duties:

  • Organize and monitor tables and events to market the SOC

  • Monitor and update the Peaylink website on a weekly basis

  • Create and distribute the weekly SOC newsletter

  • Provide marketing assistance to student organizations

  • Facilitate communication between the Office of Student Life and Engagement, the SOC, and student organizations via email

  • Maintain all social media accounts, including Facebook, X (Twitter), and Instagram

  • Maintain office hours in the Office of Student Life and Engagement

  • Execute special projects on behalf of the SOC adviser
