Why Study University Studies

The University Studies program is an excellent choice for students who are unsure of their academic career plans.  The program also is ideal for students who are attempting to fulfill core requirements for any four-year degree.  A student pursuing a bachelor degree may apply for the University Studies degree upon completion of the requirements without interrupting the bachelor program.

The University Studies associate degree program is designed to serve as a complete two-year educational program, as well as to transfer to a bachelor’s degree program.  It includes many courses that are required for any four-year program of study and an area of electives that may allow a student to enroll in either major specific courses or courses of a personal interest.

Students complete the General Education core required for all Bachelors degrees at APSU and then have 18 hours of electives to explore potential interests. Students may be able to complete the concentration completely online.

Courses in this degree are taught by faculty across the entire campus.

What Will I Learn

  • Think Critically through inquiry, analysis, and comprehensive exploration of issues, ideas, artifacts, and events before accepting or formulating an opinion or conclusion.
  • Research by recognizing when there is a need for information and be able to identify, locate, evaluate, and effectively and responsibly use and share that information for the problem at hand.
  • Integrate Learning by understanding that knowledge and skills build across the curriculum and co-curriculum, from making simple connections among ideas and experiences to synthesizing and transferring learning to new, complex situations within and beyond the campus.
  • Creatively Solve Problems through designing, evaluating and implementing a strategy to answer an open-ended question or achieve a desired goal.
  • Communicate in writing, by developing and expressing ideas in the professional writing style of their concentration, using appropriate technologies, and in speech, by preparing and delivering purposeful oral presentations designed to increase knowledge, to foster understanding, or to promote change in the listeners’ attitudes, values, beliefs, or behaviors.

Josh Rees
Meet Josh Rees - Spanish major

“My professors at Austin Peay have always asked me to think about how I can take what I’m already good at and use that to help a bigger group of people than I have before.”

Vanessa Rodriguez-Paniagua
Meet Vanessa Rodriguez-Paniagua - Sociology major

“When I went to community college, I didn’t lead. I literally went to school and left. Being here, I feel like I’ve had a lot of encouragement from my professors to do that extra thing. For me that’s being the leader I knew I could always be but needed that extra push to achieve. I’ve appreciated that a lot.”
