Why Study 6-12 Secondary Physics Education

Students who wish to combine their CoSTEM physics knowledge and skills with the COE pedagogy in education courses can learn best-practice strategies that engage 6-12 students in an inquiry-based approach in the classroom. Students will learn how to encourage 6-12 students to take a more active role in learning mechanisms underlying physical phenomena in the universe. Additionally, students will develop science literacy skills that inform decision-making, civic participation, cultural engagement, and economic productivity.

A student’s academic interests include a serious, sincere commitment to teaching relevant everyday events as a basis for science instruction that will foster interest and curiosity. Academic interests include understanding the process of conducting hands-on science experiments in a 6-12 classroom. As a result, 6-12 students are encouraged to develop exploratory questions and hypotheses to explain events or scientific phenomena. Possible hobbies for a science teacher might include observing and inferring how the physical world operates.

The demand for physics teachers remains high, with experts identifying it as one of the most in-demand subject areas in education. The need has been a consistent concern for decades and is considered a "critical shortage." Physics teacher jobs are projected to grow by 5%, with projected salary increases of 13% over 5 years.
