Why Pre-Professional Health
The Department of Biology provides an immersive environment that helps students develop
the skillsets needed to be successful as a biologist and in their professional health
program after graduation. With the Pre-Professional Health concentration, students
can pursue training in various aspects of physiology, microbiology, molecular and
cellular biology, and genetics, while also taking organic chemistry, biochemistry,
anatomy and physiology, physics, and medical terminology, all courses that most medical
health programs require as pre-requisite coursework. Additionally, students will have
the opportunity to conduct research, develop their scientific communication skills,
gain leadership experience, and become stand out applicants for professional programs.
Faculty Expertise:
The Biology faculty have expertise in various areas of biology and include trained
cell biologists, microbiologists, molecular biologists, neuroscientists, and physiologists,
as well as expertise biomedical science, pharmacology, and genetics.
Potential Student:
The potential student is interested in gaining a strong background in biology, while
also taking pre-requisite coursework for a professional health program. This concentration
is designed for students who want to pursue a professional health degree such as medical,
dental, optometry, pharmacy, physical or occupational therapy, physician assistant,
or other medical related fields.
Program Features:
The Department of Biology offers close collaboration between students and faculty
with immersive experiences that allow for students to hone their skillsets. The Biology
faculty have a vested interest in student success and are excited to include students
in experiential learning opportunities including research experiences, symposium and
conference presentations, and study abroad/study away trips.
What Will I Learn
Students earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a concentration in Pre-Professional Health will demonstrate a command of the general principles of biology in the areas of cell and molecular biology, genetics, microbiology and physiology, as well as organic chemistry and biochemistry, physics, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology.
-
Ability to use quantitative analytical skills in data analysis: Students will demonstrate problem solving skills through the analysis of graphical representation of data.
-
Skills Mastery: Students will demonstrate mastery of their biology skill sets using an evaluation tool established by the Department.
-
Career Preparedness: Since career preparedness is the intertwining of content knowledge and skills mastery in the matriculation of the student to the next level, students will demonstrate both content knowledge and skills mastery as evidence of career preparedness.
-
Academic Advisement: Academic advisement is multifaceted and includes assisting students to successfully complete their degree in a timely manner while also helping them develop as a biologist.
