Grammarly for Education
Grammarly is a writing-support tool that provides feedback on grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity, vocabulary, and writing style. It can help users review and revise assignments, emails, reports, and other written communication.
Grammarly also includes generative AI features and tools for reviewing source use and documenting the writing process. Review suggestions carefully and make your own decisions about the final text.
- Review grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Make writing clearer and easier to understand.
- Identify opportunities to improve wording and writing style.
- Receive feedback during drafting and revision.
- Review source use and citations.
- Document the writing process with Grammarly Authorship.
Using Grammarly for Coursework
Before using Grammarly for an assignment, check your instructor’s directions. Permission to use spelling and grammar feedback does not necessarily include permission to use generative AI to create or rewrite text.
Writing created or substantially rewritten with Grammarly’s generative AI features may be identified as AI-generated by Turnitin. This does not mean that every Grammarly correction will trigger an AI indicator.
Grammarly’s AI and plagiarism checks are not equivalent to Turnitin’s reports, and the tools may produce different results. A result from one tool does not guarantee the same result from another. AI-detection results are not definitive proof of misconduct and require review in context.

Grammarly Authorship
Grammarly Authorship documents information about how text is added and revised while tracking is active. Its report can provide context about the writing process, including text typed into a document, pasted from another source, or modified with AI tools.
Authorship provides additional context, not a definitive determination of academic misconduct. Report categories and other indicators need to be considered alongside assignment expectations and a discussion of the writing process.
Turn On Authorship
Before beginning an assignment that requires Authorship:
- Review the assignment directions and confirm what you need to submit.
- Use a supported desktop writing environment and the required Grammarly application.
- Turn on Authorship before you begin writing.
- Confirm that tracking is active, then complete your drafting and revision in the tracked document.
Authorship only records activity while tracking is active; it does not reconstruct an entire writing process after the work is finished.
Access Your Report
Open the Authorship report associated with your tracked document to review the recorded writing activity and text-source information.
Review the report before submitting it. If information appears incomplete or unexpected, keep your drafts and ask for help rather than treating a report label as a final explanation of what occurred.
Share Your Report
Turn on report sharing and copy the Authorship report link. Submit that link using the method specified in the assignment directions.
An instructor does not automatically receive a report simply because Authorship is active. The writer must share the report. If the assignment directions do not explain how to submit it, ask the instructor before the deadline.
Course Use for Students & Faculty
For Students
- Check whether your instructor permits Grammarly and which features are allowed.
- Turn on Authorship before beginning work when the assignment requires it.
- Follow the directions for sharing the report and submitting the assignment.
- Contact your instructor early if your device cannot support Authorship.
For Faculty
- Explain why Authorship is being used and what students need to submit.
- Provide directions for turning on tracking, opening the report, and sharing it.
- Clearly communicate expectations for generative AI, outside sources, and other writing tools.
- Address device or access limitations before students begin the assignment.
- Review reports in context rather than using a category, flag, or score as an automatic misconduct determination.
Device Limitations
Authorship is not supported on iPads or other mobile devices. For Microsoft Word, use the supported desktop application. Confirm current Word Online availability before planning an assignment around it.
Voice-to-text and other writing workflows can affect how text sources are categorized. An unexpected category is not, by itself, proof of AI use or misconduct.
