Henry and Monika Bowman Endowed Scholarship will support APSU students studying mathematics and economics

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University alumnus Henry Bowman (’68) and his wife, Monika, recently made a generous donation to the Austin Peay State University Foundation to establish the Henry and Monika Bowman Endowed Scholarship for APSU students.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must have a major in mathematics or a minor in economics and demonstrate a significant financial need. A 3.0 GPA is also required. The scholarship is available to undergraduate students, from freshmen to seniors, and it is renewable for recipients who continue to meet the criteria each year. The funding will be given equally each year to one student majoring in mathematics and one student minoring in economics. The first award will be made during the 2019-20 academic year.

Henry Bowman graduated from Austin Peay in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics. He then went on to earn a master's degree at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He has worked for the Upper Cumberland Development District for more than 40 years. Monika Bowman graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, before earning her master's degree from Tennessee Tech University. Before her retirement, she was a member of the Cookeville Regional Medical Center staff for more than 35 years. Henry and Monika have also supported APSU through their many contributions to the Candlelight Ball, the Legacy Society and to various other scholarship funds.

“My father was appointed as dean of admissions and the registrar at Austin Peay shortly after I was born,” Bowman said. “Consequently, I grew up with APSU in the 1950s and 1960s. I have always felt an appreciation for the opportunities and experiences the university afforded me. My mathematics and economics studies were especially helpful in my earning an advanced degree in economics at the University of Tennessee. This has led to an enjoyable career as an analyst with my long-term employer. My wife Monika and I are pleased to be able to assist future students in similar endeavors.”

Endowments are permanently restricted funds managed by the Austin Peay State University Foundation. The amount of each scholarship award may vary and will be determined based upon the value of the endowment and the Foundation spending plan.
