APSU’s Woodward Library screening “Paper Tigers” documentary for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

Clarksville, TN – In recognition of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Austin Peay State University’s Felix G. Woodward Library is partnering this week with Loaves and Fishes, the APSU Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement and the APSU Department of Sociology to bring awareness to poverty on college campuses and identify resources that address basic needs for living, allowing students to focus on their studies.

In support of this goal, the library is sponsoring a film screening of “Paper Tigers,” a documentary examining Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their connection to future health and social problems, at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in Room 305 of the APSU Morgan University Center. A panel discussion will follow the screening, featuring Rita Burnett, executive director of Loaves and Fishes; Roxanne Gerbrandt, associate professor of sociology; and Alexandra Wills, director of the Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement. This event is free and open to the public.

Although the community is often aware of programs that public libraries implement to help address homelessness and other social issues in their community, most people are not aware of the great need for resources across the country on college campuses that address housing and food insecurity. According to the latest survey by The Hope Center, 46% of respondents reported experiencing food insecurity within the 30 days preceding the poll, 56% reported being housing insecure within the last year, and a staggering 17% reported experiencing actual homelessness during the last year (2019).

Faculty and staff at the Woodward Library have been working on an initiative to help bring awareness to this problem for the past year. Many resources already exist on the APSU campus and within the Clarksville community to help students and community members meet their basic needs. This initiative hopes to address not only making the information known about where to find these resources, but also to create an environment where those in need feel comfortable in asking for help.
