Iranian multidisciplinary artist Raheleh Filsoofi to speak at Austin Peay

The Department of Art + Design, with support from the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, is pleased to welcome Iranian ceramicist/video artist Raheleh Filsoofi to Austin Peay State University.
“Filsoofi is an artist that combines ceramics, poetry, ambient sound and video,” said Michael Dickins, chair of the Visiting Artist Speaker Committee. “By incorporating ancient and contemporary media, her work synthesizes sociopolitical statements as a point of departure and further challenges these fundamental arguments while aiming for a holistic sensory experience. I cannot thank CECA enough for its continuous support in bringing world-class artists to Clarksville.”
“Filsoofi’s visit is multifaceted,” Dickins added. “In addition to the community lecture, she will also conduct one-on-one studio visits with select students and, as a core faculty member of the Visual Arts at Chautauqua Institution in which Austin Peay shares a partnership, give a presentation on the residency to interested students. Along with her husband and collaborator, they are also visiting The New Gallerytostart planning a future exhibition scheduledforspring of 2021.”
Filsoofi’s lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, in the Art + Design building’s Room 120. Her lecture will open with a special performance by Reza Filsoofi, an instrumentalist, singer and composer specializing in Iranian music.
Raheleh Filsoofi is a multidisciplinary artist based in Texas, South Florida and Iran. She is an active participant in juried art exhibitions both in Iran and the United States, including the recent solo exhibition “Imagined Boundaries,” a multimedia digital installation on border issues, comprising two separate exhibitions debuted concurrently at Florida Cultural Consortium and Abad art gallery in Tehran (2017); “Dual Frequency” group exhibition at The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, Florida (2017) and a Group Exhibition “Fragile” at The Contemporary Art Museum of Isfahan, Iran (2016).
Her most recent multifaceted, self-curated art exhibition “Fold: Art, Metaphor and Practice” – which engaged over 20 artists, scholars and educators – has proved to be the highlight of her professional artistic career. She has been the recipient of various grants and awards such as the prestigious South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists funded in part by the National Endowment for the Art and The Dave Bown Project Award (2016). She is an assistant professor of ceramics at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley at the Department of Art. She holds an MFA in fine arts from Florida Atlantic University and a BFA in ceramics from Al-Zahra University in Tehran, Iran.
