Irwin family establishes the APSU Hazel S. Irwin Emerging Leaders Endowment

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – In 1992, members of the Austin Peay State University Business Office established the Hazel S. Irwin Emerging Leaders Scholarship to honor their fellow employee and to benefit APSU students. Over the years, staff have continued to contribute to the fund. Recently, Hazel Irwin made a gift to endow the scholarship in her name, while her children, Peggy Seay (’87) and Don Irwin, have provided the funds to continue to award the scholarship while the endowment is in its investment period. The new Hazel S. Irwin Emerging Leaders Endowment will be used to fund the APSU President’s Emerging Leaders scholarship program each year.
Irwin and her husband, the late Dr. Ed Irwin, came to Austin Peay in 1962 when he accepted a position as assistant professor of English. She began working in the APSU Business Office in 1966, where she remained an employee for 21 years.
In accordance with University policy, the President’s Emerging Leaders Program director will determine the scholarship recipients from a competitive group of applicants.
“I chose to help endow the scholarship in loving honor of my mother, Hazel Sparks Irwin, who at the age of 93, inspires many with her love of God, family and friends,” Peggy Seay said. “She has an unstoppable ‘can-do, will-do’ outlook, and a competitive bridge game spirit. It is a most fortunate blessing to be able to contribute to mom's scholarship knowing that it will help aspiring students pursue their dream of obtaining an APSU degree in their chosen field of study.”
Endowments are permanently restricted funds managed by the Austin Peay State University Foundation. The amount of each scholarship award may vary and will be determined based upon the value of the endowment and the foundation spending plan.
