On Aug. 6, Austin Peay State University celebrated two of its Army Reserved Officers’ Training Corps students with a commissioning ceremony that followed the University’s summer commencement.

The ceremony marked 2nd Lt. Shawn King and 2nd Lt. Michelle Phillippi’s entry into the U.S. Army officer corps.

King and Phillippi became the 834th and 835th Governors Guard cadets to earn their commissions during the ROTC’s 50 years on campus. The ROTC’s first classes at Austin Peay were in September 1971.

King and Phillippi’s commissioning follows Austin Peay’s largest commissioning ceremony ever when in May the university celebrated 33 ROTC graduates.

And in February, Austin Peay celebrated the program’s 800th cadet – Katherine Alba – when she commissioned as an Army officer.
