Austin Peay students tour the West during Spring Break with Govs Outdoors

(Posted March 12, 2019)

Eight Austin Peay-based students traveled west with Govs Outdoors during Spring Break, taking in sights such as the Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest National Park, the Devil’s Bridge and Cathedral Rock trails in Arizona, the Santa Rosa Blue Hole in New Mexico and the Cadillac Ranch in Texas.

“One thing that really stuck out on this trip was that no matter the person’s background, we are all drawn to nature,” Clayton Sheehan, assistant director of programs for University Recreation, said. “Each student took advantage of the trip, and we tried to see as much as we could.

“Even when it meant getting up at 5:30 a.m. to see the sun rise over the Grand Canyon.”

The students ranged from 17-23 years old and included an exchange student from France, a military veteran, two soccer players and a high schooler who attends Middle College.

APSU’s Govs Outdoors, a program through University Recreation, offers about 10 trips every semester to members of the Foy Fitness & Recreation Center, including Austin Peay students, faculty and staff and members of the surrounding community. And the trips come at a great value. The Grand Canyon trip was only $450.

Remaining trips this semester include Rock Island State Park Camping Weekend, March 23-24 – $35; Southern Illinois Outdoor Climbing Trip, March 29-31 – $55; Montgomery Bell State Park Sampler, April 6 – $20; Cumberland Trail Backpacking Trip, April 12-14 – $55; and King and Queen’s Bluff Earth Day Trail Cleanup and Climb, April 20 – free.
