Swim Lessons

The Foy Pool offers several different choices when it comes to swim lessons.  We offer American Red Cross group lessons from the Parent & Child level through Learn-to-Swim level 3. After level 3, we encourage swimmers to join our Fitness Swimmer Camp where swimmers enhance their technique and learn competitive swimming skills.  APSU is proud to also be able to offer private and semi-private swim lessons for those wanting a more tailored, one-on-one instruction.

Swim Lesson Level Descriptions

The Parent and Child Sensory Swim lesson are each thirty minutes long and are designed for 6 months – 3 years old.

The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with water and prepare them to learn to swim in the American Red Cross Preschool Aquatics or Learn-to-Swim courses. Participants will grow more comfortable in and around water through games, songs, and activities designed for their age level.  This course is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers or to survive in the water on their own.

The Preschool Aquatic classes are each thirty minutes long, are designed for 3-5 year-olds, and are split into three levels based on the children's skills.

Red Cross Preschool Aquatics provides young children with positive, developmentally appropriate aquatic learning experiences. Preschool Aquatics is designed to orient young preschoolers to the aquatic environment and to help them gain basic aquatic skills.  In addition, participants start learning about how to be safe around water.  Participants will begin gaining rudimentary propulsive skills on both the front and the back and begin establishing independent aquatic locomotion skills.

The Level 1 swim lessons are each 45 minutes long and are designed for children 5-7 years old.

This course helps students feel comfortable in and enjoy the water.  Participants will learn glides and floats and begin learning the basics of swimming.  The purpose of this class is to begin developing positive attitudes, good swimming habits, and safe practices in and around the water, as well as the fundamentals of floating and swimming.  Students may still need assistance from instructors in performing skills.

The Level 2 swim lessons are each 45 minute sessions and are suggested for children 6-8 years old.

Participants must be comfortable in and under the water to be successful in this level.  The purpose of this class is to give participants success with fundamental skills, including learning how to float without support, recover to a vertical position, perform the front and back crawl, and how to tread water.  This course is designed to build upon skills learned in Level 1 and to perform without assistance.

The Level 3 swim lessons are each 45 minute sessions and are suggested for children 7 years of age and above.

Participants must be able to perform basic strokes, such as those learned in Level 2, without assistance.  This class is designed to build upon the skills learned in Level 2 and to familiarize students with deeper water and more precise techniques.  Student will learn to tread water, perform rotary breathing, and successfully do front crawl, elementary backstroke, and flutter, dolphin, and breaststroke kicks.  Additionally, students may work on treading water, flutter and dolphin kicks, and swimming at least 50 yards continuously using various strokes.

Swim lessons for participants ages 15 and older, held in two-week sessions with a total of eight 45-minute classes with one instructor for every five participants.

    • Beginner: For adults who have no aquatic experience. Participants will learn to float, tread water, glide, retrieve objects from underwater, and the basics of at least three kicks and strokes.
    • Intermediate: For adults who know the basics of swimming but would like to improve their technique and/or learn new and proper kicks and strokes. Participants will learn to swim longer distances and achieve proper technique in at least three kick and stroke combinations.

Private Swim Lessons

Participants in private swim lessons receive one-on-one instructions from a trained instructor based upon his/her abilities, skills and needs. Lessons are offered for every age and swim level. Each private lesson will be specifically designed for the participant, providing a number of skills and abilities through drills, games and lesson plans that are geared toward the individual age group.

Private lessons are scheduled on request. Although we try our best to accommodate participant schedules, volume of activity at the pool and instructor availability will impact scheduling.

Private Swim Lessons requests are currently CLOSED and will reopen once the waiting list is down or by April 2022

Fitness Swimmer Camp

Designed for ages 5-17 who have passed the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Level 3 course, APSU’s Fitness Swimmer Camp is structured similarly to a swim team without the full season commitment. Participants will work on proper technique in the four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly), improve their endurance, learn flip turns and competitive open turns, and gain lifelong swimming skills that promote a healthy and active lifestyle.

Fitness Swimmer Camps are held weekly. Each week there will be four 45-minute practices that swimmers can choose to attend. Swimmers are not required to attend every practice, but are welcome to attend all of them if they choose. APSU’s Fitness Swimmer Camp is taught by American Red Cross certified instructors.
