Following a nationwide search and interviews of several finalists, the position of director of Austin Peay State University's Woodward Library has been filled by an internal candidate.

Deborah Fetch, who served as interim dean of Woodward Library since November 2000, was the clear choice of the selection committee, according to Dr. Bruce Speck, vice president for academic affairs. Speck said, "During her interim appointment, Deborah proved that she not only has extensive library knowledge and skills, especially in networked information, but she also has excellent leadership abilities."

Fetch earned a master's degree in library and information science and a bachelor's degree in anthropology, both from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

She replaces Dr. Donald Joyce, dean of library and media services, who died March 8, 2001, following a short illness. Before coming to APSU, Fetch had extensive and varied experience in the libraries of Pennsylvania State University, University of Southwestern Louisiana and Oregon State University.

In 1993 Fetch joined the APSU faculty as associate professor and head of Woodward Library's cataloging department. Among her efforts, she coordinated the implementation of the Horizon cataloging system, initiated and coordinated a project for the database clean-up and barcoding of the entire library collection and initiated and coordinated the integration of electronic resources into the library's online catalog.

Fetch has written several articles that were published in scholarly journals, and she has participated in numerous professional meetings, including assuming responsibility for planning the program and serving as a panelist on "Cataloging the World Wide Web" for an annual meeting of the Tennessee Library Association.

She is active in the American Library Association, working in the organization's Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, Association of College and Research Libraries and Association of Library Administration and Management.

She is a member of the board of directors of the Tennessee State Library Association, having served previously as treasurer, co-chair of the Finance Committee and vice chair of the Technical Services Round Table.
