Educause to manage Internet's ".edu" domain, extend ".edu" to community colleges
April 16, 2001
The U.S. Department of Commerce announced Wednesday that it will hand over management of the ".edu" domain to Educause. The group's first order of business will be to extend ".edu" addresses to two-year colleges.
Educause, which represents 1,800 colleges and universities worldwide, will assign ".edu" addresses. It will also review the rules governing who can use that address.
Up to now, the ".edu" address has been issued to qualified groups free of charge. But Educause may begin charging a small fee to recover its cost after passing of the 30-day public-comment period before the agreement is signed.
