M.A. in English, Linguistics Concentration
Program Course Requirements:
- ENGL 5000 Bibliography and Methods of Research 3
- Five (5) graduate-level literature courses (15 credits total)
- Five (5) graduate-level courses (15 credits total; can include 6 thesis hours; can be literature, linguisitics, creative writing, professional/technical writing courses)
- Passing score on Comprehensive Examination.
Requirements:
Twelve (12) credits in graduate-level Linguistics courses. The courses listed below will count towards the Linguistics Concentration and simultaneously count towards item 3 above. An approved thesis in Linguistics can also count towards the 12 required credits. Students must maintain an overall GPA of 3.9 or higher in linguistics courses in order to complete the Linguistics Concentration.

- ENGL 5990 - Thesis 3 or 6

This thesis (6 credits) counts towards Linguistics Concentration only if it is an approved thesis in Linguistics overseen by a Linguistics faculty member.

Required Application Materials
- Application for admission
- Application fee: $45 domestic or $55 international
- Official transcripts from all colleges attended
- Official GRE scores
- Two letters of recommendation
- Brief cover letter outlining graduate career goals
- Scholarly writing sample (minimum 6 pages)
- Military documents, if applicable
- Admission decision by department
Admission Requirements
The English program admits for spring, summer and fall terms through the APSU main campus. To be admitted, applicants should meet the following admission requirements:
- Undergraduate GPA of 2.9 attained on undergraduate coursework
- Bachelor’s degree, in any field,from a regionally accredited institution
- Minimum acceptable GRE scores calculated as the following:
oGPA + (0.15 x GRE [Verbal]) > 23.5
oGPA + (0.15 x GRE [Quant]) > 23.5
oGRE Analytical Writing Score of at least 3.5
- Receipt of admission by the English department selection committee
Applicants must submit two sets of application materials: one to the College of Graduate Studies, and one to the Graduate Coordinator of the English program at englishgrad@apsu.edu. The Graduate Coordinator will accept unofficial copies of GRE scores and transcripts. Only completed admission packets will be forwarded to the department admission committee for consideration. Admission decisions are made by the English admission committee.
International Admission Requirements

Dependent upon program and/or visa status, additional graduate admission requirements must be met. Please refer to the Admission Requirements for International Students page on our website for detailed information and forms that may be required. All admission documents must be received and processed before selection committee review.
Admission Status
Regular admission will be granted to applicants who have met all entrance requirements. To be granted conditional admission, unofficial transcripts and entrance exam scores may be submitted until the official documents are received by Graduate Admissions. If official documents are not received as prescribed in the current Graduate Bulletin all classes will be dropped. Denied admission status will be granted to applicants who do not meet the regular or conditional criteria for admission to the program.
