For those interested in teaching English as a Foreign Language, The Eriksson College of Education at Austin Peay State University now offers a program which will allow enrollee to add an ELL endorsement to their existing licensure.  In order to be eligible, you must currently be enrolled or meet the requirements of admission into the graduate programs offered by The Eriksson College of Education. Specific information regarding course offerings and programs is provided below and may also be accessed via the program website.

EDUC 6450 - Culture in the ELL Classroom

This course addresses the cultural issues that English Language Learners (ELL) and their teachers are likely to encounter in classrooms which affect foreign language acquisition and curricular learning with the purpose of acquiring pedagogical knowledge and techniques which will facilitate ELL’s academic success. Course participants will research and critically reflect upon the aspects of culture which impact learning processes and related pedagogical theories as a basis for creating appropriate teaching materials and facilitating the acquisition of English as a foreign language.

EDUC 6620 - Teaching Grammar to English Language Learners

Modern English Grammar will familiarize students with the basic structure of English, particularly those areas that cause most difficulty for non-native speakers. The course has several goals: to become familiar with grammatical terminology and practice identifying and labeling sentence structures; to develop an understanding of how English syntax works to convey meaning; and to become familiar with various techniques of teaching grammar to those whose first language is not English.

EDUC 6630 - Reading and Writing Methods for ELL

This course is designed to build background knowledge regarding oral, reading, and writing development in English for K-12 English language learners.  The course covers language acquisition theories, literacy development in the first and second language, classroom organization, teaching strategies, and instructional methods in reading and all content areas as well as assessment procedures for effective English language instruction in the PreK-12 classroom environment.  The course is specifically designed to assist practicing classroom teachers in meeting the needs of English language learners and newly arriving immigrant students with varying levels of English language proficiency and varying levels of educational experiences.

EDUC 6650 - Assessment of ELL Students

This online graduate course provides an introduction to standardized assessments and classroom-based assessments for ELL students based on TESOL standards for Teacher Education Programs. Among the topics addressed are: purposes of assessment, types of assessment, authentic forms of assessment, designing or adapting assessment tools for ELL, assessment in the content areas for ELL, etc.

LING 506H - Theory in Second Language Acquisition

This course is an introduction to the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA).  There will be a focus on the theories used in SLA.  Students will also compare first and second language acquisition as well as examine some SLA theories are used by applied linguists to promote acquisition.

LING 506B - Structure of Language

Students will examine the structure of language (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics) and relevant theories that help advance our understanding of how language works.  Attention is also given to how this knowledge is applicable to the teaching of English as a first or other language.

All courses are offered online. 



The corresponding PRAXIS exam is English to Speakers of Other Languages (5361). The minimum passing score is 155.  Registration information may be located online: http://www.ets.org/praxis/tn/requirements .

How to Enroll

To complete the above 18 hours without earning a degree, candidates should apply as “Non-Degree.” Acceptance as a non-degree seeking graduate student does not guarantee acceptance into a master’s program.

The student must:

1.   Complete an application

2.   Pay a one-time, non-refundable $25.00 application fee

3.   Provide evidence of an earned bachelor’s degree with a minimum 2.5 GPA

Note: Non-degree seeking graduate students are ineligible for financial aid.

Master of Arts in Education,
Curriculum and Instruction – Advanced Studies with Emphasis in ELL
 How to Enroll

Candidates should apply for the Master of Arts in Education (M. Ed.) with a major in Curriculum and Instruction and a specialization in Advanced Studies.

Admission Requirements 

1.   Undergraduate GPA of 2.75

2.  Official scores on the General test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) with a minimum 142            verbal and 139 quantitative scores

3.   Teacher Licensure is required

Educational Specialist for Secondary Education with Emphasis in ELL

Candidates should apply for the Ed.S. Degree – Educational Specialist with a Major in

Education and a Concentration in Secondary Education

Admission Requirements:

1.   Evidence of an earned Master’s Degree

2.   A GPA of 3.25 at the Master’s level

3.  Official scores on the General test of the Graduate Record Examination with a minimum 145 verbal and      140 quantitative scores

4.  Have a record of successful teaching experience
