Monique Freemon

Dr. Freemon earned her Ph.D. from The College of Communication and Information (with an emphasis journalism) at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville in August 2020. Prior to attending UT Knoxville, she earned her M.S. from UT Knoxville in the same area; and a B.S. in communications from Austin Peay State University. Dr. Freemon’s research broadly focuses on race and racial representation in student newsrooms, journalism pedagogy, and the media industry. She takes a critical approach to examining the experiences of Black journalism students in the journalism classroom and student newsrooms. While she places race at the forefront, Dr. Freemon strongly acknowledges the intersectionality of her research and the complexities of an individual’s lived experience. Her hope is to provide a platform for voices that may be suppressed and silenced. Dr. Freemon’s ultimate aspiration is to progress equity and liberation for these students and to apply this research to other racial groups in various areas within journalism.

For professional experience, Dr. Freemon was a writer and graphic designer for The Amplifier, INSPIRER Magazine, Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network, Hellion Magazine, The All State, and The Monocle. She has taught courses and sessions in media writing, graphic design, racial ideologies, social monitoring, social listening, and magazine production. Additionally, has created marketing and promotional materials for TSPN, Agency865, Deliverance Outreach Temple Church, and BOBCATSSS.
