Testimonial from a Former Student

Matt

Matthew Horning

My name is Matthew Horning, I recently graduated from Austin Peay State University's Phlebotomy Program. I was able to take this course thanks to Workforce Essentials granting me a scholarship, it was the second medical course I have taken in my education career (I previously attended Murray State University's EMT- Basic course at Fort Campbell). As a result of this program I was able to obtain employment before I graduated from the course. I work as an Emergency Room Technician at Muhlenberg County Community Hospital in Greenville, Kentucky. In this job, drawing blood and obtaining specimens is a large part of what an Emergency Room Technician does.

My career goal is to be a Paramedic, I took phlebotomy as a pre-requisite to better stand out from other applicants applying to school to become a Paramedic. I will be attending a trauma course in July in California that is run by former military Special Operations Medics. Following that I plan to attend Austin Peay to complete the rest of my pre-requisites then attend and earn my certification as a Paramedic.

I would love to attend Austin Peay for Advanced-EMT/Paramedic, I know the course is in the process of becoming official but I can speak to the matter of needing more programs like this around the state. Currently the closest program to Clarksville is in Nashville with Volunteer State Community College. For some, that can be too far to commute and with an accelerated program like that it would be extremely difficult to work and go to school simultaneously.

I again cannot thank Workforce Essentials enough for giving me the chance to attend this course and I hope that future applicants can receive funding as I have. I was able to fuel my passion and drive in pursuit of my dreams, and because of that I will have the opportunity to become the best Paramedic I can be and give back to the people and the State of Tennessee. I hope that my success is enough of a reason to grant future applicants the same chance I had at success.
