1.  What does it mean to major in Communication?

Communication, in its purest sense, is the act of conveying information. Students who major in Communication are taught to speak, write and work professionally while gaining true understanding of communication situations, media, research and application. Courses look at the theory behind communication and its goals, while at the same time putting theoretical lessons and methods into practice in a variety of communication mediums. Communication students are taught to look beyond what the message is alone, and discover the meaning, reasoning and art behind it. Through class structure, independent study, and actual experience, students begin to understand and appreciate human interaction, and work to become professionals with up-to-date technology, skills and resources used in the industry.

2.  Why is Austin Peay State University a good place to major in Communication?

The Department of Communication at APSU is unique in providing students hands-on experience from the first day they enter the classroom and studios. Students are taught professional skills in a professional setting and receive personal attention from their instructors. Students work in small class sizes which allow for more individual assistance from faculty and help make the learning atmosphere more successful. Students can participate in several areas such as broadcast media, corporate communication, public relations, print and web journalism as well as sports production. The award winning campus radio station operates 24/7 year round providing a wide range of music, public service and public affairs programming. The TV and Cable component covers almost all sporting events for the Govs and Lady Govs as well as production of political and opinion-based programs as well as local and national election coverage. Students in our non-broadcast concentrations also receive real-world experience through practicums and internships, many of which are placed through department and faculty connections in the professional realm. Communication students can participate in a variety of nationally and professionally linked student organizations, and learn through actual research involving political polls, telephone surveys and marketing research. Overall, our students learn both the theory and the practice of communication giving them skills that translate directly into the professional world.

3.  What can APSU Communication majors do after graduation?

APSU Communication B.S. and B.A. degrees offer seven specializations, and up to four minors. Communication is applicable in every life situation, and our students can use their degrees to excel in any career path. Though specific concentrations lead many students to careers in radio and television stations, web design businesses, and traveling with production companies, many others take their degrees in different directions. Communication can be used in marketing, sales, public relations, event planning, management, advertising, journalism, and in almost any other professional career. Communication is also a fantastic starting degree before pursuing graduate studies in Communication, Law, and a wide variety of programs.
