Austin Peay will celebrate the grand opening of the Drew Simmons Fitness Center with a dedication ceremony and reception Friday, Oct. 31.

The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. in the Memorial Health Gymnasium.

Simmons, who served as director of intramurals and recreation at the University, died of a heart attack Nov. 17, 1999. More than 400 people attended his funeral, which was only the second one held on the campus of Austin Peay.

He began working at Austin Peay in 1979 as assistant director of intramurals and recreation. He coordinated Austin Peay's National Youth Sports Program, a summer program that teaches sports and health education to youths ages 10 to 16. The program was named “best new program of 1996” at the 1997 NYSP workshop, second only to Yale University.

The newly renovated, more than 6,000-square-foot facility features state-of-the-art equipment, including:

• 20 cardio stations (treadmills, stationary bikes, steppers and ellipticals);
• More than 4 tons of free weights and dumbbells;
• Total-body circuit of Nautilus pin-selected resistance equipment;
• Modern, multi-purpose group exercise studio and indoor cycling room.

In addition, the fitness center will offer a full schedule of 20 group fitness classes, including step, yoga, kickboxing, toning and group cycling, as well as ample locker, changing and shower facilities.

“This fitness center will be a great addition for Austin Peay,” says David Davenport, director of University recreation.

A free orientation is required before patrons enjoy the facility. Only Austin Peay students will have free access to the facility. All others will be charged a minimal fee.

The Drew Simmons Fitness Center will be open daily. For more information, telephone Davenport at 7564.
