Snyder scholarship endowment announced

A friend of the late Dr. David Snyder, professor of biology, is establishing a scholarship in his honor at APSU.

Dr. Steve Wallace, a Clarksville orthodontist, has pledged $50,000 to honor Snyders 39 years of service to the community as a distinguished professor, herpetologist, ornithologist and family man. APSUs Office of University Advancement has been challenged to match Wallaces gift to establish the Dr. David H. Snyder Memorial Scholarship Endowment.

Snyder, who lived in Palmyra, started his career at APSU in 1962. A member of professional societies including Phi Kappa Phi, National Audubon Society, Tennessee Herpetology Society, Herpetologist League, Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles and the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, he passed away unexpectedly on May 8, 2004.

Dr. Edward Irwin, professor emeritus of English at APSU, said, “In Dr. Snyder's case, the type of mind he demonstrated in his work was the type he hoped his students might emulate … (He had) curiosity, skepticism, an awe of nature, an eagerness to learn more about the world and our natural place in it, an unabashed joy in the simple thrills of existence, a broad range of interests in and enjoyment of subjects other than the one he taught and a genuine delight in learning and sharing his knowledge.”

To make a tax-deductible donation to the scholarship, send your gift to University Advancement, APSU, P.O. Box 4417, Clarksville, TN 37044. Pledge cards are available online at the APSU biology department's Web site: http://www.apsu.edu/biol_page.
