News in higher education

The Senate Education Committee last week discussed a comprehensive bill that stresses better preparation for college rather than lowering standards to help students retain their state lottery scholarships.

Bill sponsor Jamie Woodson, a Knoxville Republican and the committee's chairman, had hoped to try to pass the measure, but members concerned with the lack of retention provisions requested more time to review the legislation.

Woodson's proposal would reward students who take tougher courses in high school with an increase in their HOPE scholarship, as much as $1,000. Even with the worst crime in U.S. college campus history still in the news, students at Tennessee colleges and universities and their parents got some good news Friday: Crime on the state's college campuses slightly decreased in 2006.

A report by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation shows a 31.5 percent decrease in auto thefts and a 10.5 percent decline in drug crimes in 2006, according to Crime on Campus, an annual compilation of all crimes involving campuses.

Overall, there was a 1.4 percent drop in the number of reported crimes. (The Tennessean, April 28, 2007)
