New market on APSU campus gets a name

For about a month, a new convenience store in the Hand Village resident hall complex at Austin Peay State University was typically referred to as The No-Name Store.

The small market, operated by APSUs dining services contractor Chartwells, is the only business of this type within a residence hall, but company officials struggled over what to call this new venture.
For about a month, a new convenience store in the Hand Village resident hall complex at Austin Peay State University was typically referred to as “The No-Name Store.”

The small market, operated by APSU's dining services contractor Chartwells, is the only business of this type within a residence hall, but company officials struggled over what to call this new venture.

So in January, they decided to let the students name it. Chartwells held a naming contest for the store, and over the course of a month, they received more than 110 entries. On Feb. 3, during a ribbon cutting ceremony, the store's official new name was announced — “The Hand Stand.”

APSU student Dennis Warnke was the first to submit the name, earning him $250 in plus dollars as part of his campus meal plan, a new mountain bike and his name on a plaque that will always hang inside The Hand Stand store.

Four other students also submitted the name The Hand Stand after Warnke's submission, and each received gift bags during the ceremony.

The store's operating hours are 7-9 a.m. and 5-11 p.m., Monday through Friday; noon to 9 p.m. on Saturdays; and 5-11 p.m. on Sundays.
