APSU's women's track and field team closed out its indoor season with a seventh-place finish at the O'Reilly Auto Parts/Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field championships, Saturday, Feb. 26, hosted by Eastern Illinois.
Junior Sherlonda Johnson had another impressive performance, scoring 17 of the Lady Govs' 23 points. She won the triple jump with a personal-best lead of 19-08.00, covering the field by 2 3/4 inches and besting her personal record by 6 1/2 inches. She finished fourth in a hotly contested, 60-meter dash with a time of 7.68, just .06 seconds off the winning pace. She added a seventh-place finish in the 200-meter dash, completing the run with a time of 26.03.
Senior Cicely Sullivan finished seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 37-09.50. Austin Peay's 1,600-meter relay team—Sullivan, Keauna McCall, Danja Yates and Leann White—finished fifth with a team-best time of 4:04.42.
All told, 11 personal bests were set at the championships.
“When you put together a lot of personal bests, you have to be pleased,” says Lady Govs Head Coach Doug Molnar. “The one frustrating thing was our six ninth-place finishes. If we can get them into the finals, we can make up more than just one point and maybe move up a spot or two in the final standings.”
Austin Peay now begins preparations for the outdoor portion of its schedule. That season begins Saturday, March 5, when they travel to the Lipscomb Quad.
