Jazz Combo to perform in concert

The Austin Peay State University Department of Music and the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts will present a concert featuring the APSU Jazz Combo.

The Jazz Combo will perform at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 7 in the Music/Mass Communication Concert Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of David Steinquest, professor of music who will accompany the ensemble on vibraphone, the Jazz Combo plans to perform a number of selections: “Tokyo Blues” by Horace Silver, “Smooth Boperator” by Arthur Lipner, “Mighty Fine” by Joey Baron and “Starrburst” by Ellen Starr.

The concert also will feature other jazz titles such as “Mingusiana” by Ralph Towner, “The Magic Shop” by Bob Brookmeyer, “Fog Scene” by Arthur Lipner, “West Coast Blues” by Wes Montgomery and “The Journey” by Gary Freeman.

Steinquest said the Jazz Combo's performance of the musical pieces will illustrate the diverse talents of the group.

“This small ensemble focuses on developing improvisational skills in a wide variety of jazz music,” he said.

Members of the APSU Jazz Combo are Nigel Brown, alto saxophone; Robert Long, tenor saxophone; Mario Key, trombone; Richard Burchett, guitar; Jarrod Jackson, bass; and Kedric Hill, drums.
