Are you at risk for meningitis? Here are the facts:
• Meningitis is an infection of the spinal cord and can either be viral or bacterial.
• Viral meningitis is less severe and resolves without specific treatment.
• Bacterial meningitis can be severe and may result in brain damage.
• Signs and symptoms of meningitis include high fever, headache and stiff neck.
• Bacterial meningitis is treated with antibiotics. Are you at risk for meningitis? Here are the facts:

• Bacterial meningitis can be severe and may result in brain damage.

• Bacterial meningitis is treated with antibiotics.
• Some forms of bacterial meningitis are contagious primarily through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions and close or prolonged personal contact.
• There are two vaccines for bacterial meningitis available in the U.S., but they cannot prevent all types of the disease.
