Guitar student wins national competition, releases CD

APSU graduate guitar student Alan Mearns won third place at the Appalachian GuitarFest held at Appalachian State, Boone, N.C. this past weekend, April 3-6.

Competing against a field of 40 competitors from around the country, Mearns advanced to the finals with performances of music by Dowland, Bach, Mozart and Albeniz. The GuitarFest director, Dr. Douglas James, described this year's competition as the
highest standard of performance so far.

Competing against a field of 40 competitors from around the country, Mearns advanced to the finals with performances of music by Dowland, Bach, Mozart and Albeniz. The GuitarFest director, Dr. Douglas James, described this year's competition as the
highest standard of performance so far.

Mearns' recently released CD of original compositions in Celtic style, "The Tree," is to be featured in the next issue of "Fingerstyle" magazine. He will perform his final graduate recital at APSU at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 1, in the concert theatre of the music/mass communication building.
