A slow start prevented Austin Peay's football team from claiming a season-opening victory at Campbellsville, Saturday, Sept. 4.

The Governors could not overcome a 20-0 first-half deficit as APSU fell to the Tigers, 27-14. As a result, APSU is still seeking its first season-opening road win since 1987.

The Govs struggled much of the first half on both sides of the football. Campbellsville gained quick momentum, taking the ball after a Govs punt and marching 54 yards for the game's first score. However, a missed tackle on a third-and-10 pass play during the first series gave the home team momentum.

With freshman Chris Fletcher providing the impetus, the Govs came back and moved the ball all the way down to the Campbellsville 25 before a penalty derailed them.

In the second quarter, the Tigers took full control, scoring on two straight possessions to provide a 20-0 lead with 2:31 left.

But the Govs marched right back, and with 0.7 seconds left, quarterback Jesse Kellogg found Paul Derrick on a tipped pass in the end zone, a 27-yard score.

The Govs defense finally settled down early in the second half, providing the offense opportunities. One drive ended at the Campbellsville 21, but a missed field goal resulted in no Govs points. At the Campbellsville 30, Fletcher took a pitch, broke to the outside and ran 49 yards before he was knocked out of bounds at the 15-yard line. Two plays later, he returned to the field to rush eight yards for the score, making it a 20-14 game.

Again the Govs defense stymied Campbellsville, forcing a punt. This time the Govs started from their own 12, and Kellogg saw his pass intercepted and returned to the Govs 15. The turnover resulted in setting up Campbellsville's final score.

The Govs will return to action next Saturday at Valparaiso in a noon kickoff.
